July News & Updates Ahead of Browns Training Camp

I thought it would be a good idea to update Browns fans on some recent Browns news with the rookies reporting to training camp on Monday, July 22nd & the Vets on Tuesday, July 23rd.

  • DHop Extension
    • The Browns rewarded their kicker with a three-year contract extension worth $15.9 million (The official breakdown has not been reported). Hopkins currently has one year left on his contract. So, this extension will keep him in Cleveland through the 2027 season. I believe it is about a 2.5m raise from his current deal. He gave the Browns a dramatic upgrade from previous seasons.
    • 2023 Season Highlights:
    • 24-26 Extra Points
    • 33-36 Field Goals – Going 8-8 in 50+ attempts.
  • Amari Cooper’s Contract situation
    • Still no real update. We have not heard about a possible holdout. Hopefully, they can get something done soon. Maybe a one or two-year extension? Mike Evans was given a two-year deal worth $41 million and a total guarantee of $35 million. This ranks as the 18th highest-paid WR. I think the Browns could do something similar to this. Cooper is currently at the 21st highest contract for a WR at $20 million per year.
    • There have been what I think are more “fan rumors” about a possible trade for Brandon Aiyuk. I just don’t see this as a possibility. He wants a massive contract and to be honest I don’t like how he has dealt with the situation. Washington seems to be the landing spot for him, although I don’t think Shanahan is a fan of his former team. Pittsburgh is another team that has been rumored to be interested but they will have to pay Pickens big money in about a year. I don’t see them having two expensive WRs on the roster. I think the Patriots would be the best fit for him. They don’t have any weapons on offense and he would be good for a young QB.
  • JOK Extension Talks
    • A report came out from Brad Stainbrook that JOK and the Browns are not very close on a deal. My guess is that JOK probably wants top 5 OLB pay, but the Browns will want him to prove that this year. I could see the Browns doing a Delpit type extension. The Browns gave Grant Delpit an extension in early December last year. It is my opinion that the Browns should get it done sooner rather than later. I think JOK is going to have an All-Pro type of year. This is only going to make it more expensive.
  • Who else could be in line for an extension?
    • Martin Emerson – I know it is early, but I think we have seen enough from him to extend him at some point during the season. He is another player that is on the rise and he will finally get his deserved recognition this year by the NFL media.
    • Myles Garret – He is a sneaky pick I would look at. I am sure he will want Bosa money at some point in the near future.
  • Nick Chubb
    • There really isn’t much for me to say besides Nick Chubb is an absolute freak and I cannot wait for his revenge tour this season. If you have not seen the video of Chubb squatting over 500 pounds, then you should look it up… it’s unbelievable! (I still hope he sits the first couple of games.)
  • NFL Position Rankings
    • Myles Garret was voted the Best Edge player in the NFL.
    • Denzel Ward was voted as the second best corner in the NFL
    • Awesome to see to Browns players get the recognition the deserve! At the two most important positions on the defensive side of the ball as well. Going to be another fun year to watch this Browns defense.
  • Deshaun Watson Update
    • Watson held his second annual 7 on 7 camp for local Cleveland High Schools. The biggest news is that Watson indicated that he will be full go for the start of training camp. This is big news because the Browns will be installing a new offense under new OC Ken Dorsey. The offense will need as many reps as they can get. Also, I thought it was really cool to see the Glenville football team give Watson a state championship ring. He added that he will return the favor with Super Bowl rings.
